Researching a Topic End-to-End

This workflow shows you how to go from a blank slate to a comprehensive research collection — using Research Reports, Notes, Documents, and Collections together.

1

Generate a Research Report

Start by heading to Chat and selecting Research mode. Type your topic and choose a report type — Standard for a quick overview, or Deep Research for a comprehensive exploration. Chunk will search the web, analyze sources, and write a structured report.

Tip: Use Advanced Options to set your preferred writing tone and citation format before generating.

2

Save key findings as Notes

As you read through the report, save important sections as Notes. Click the save-to-notes action on any AI response to convert it to a clean markdown note. Add tags like the topic name to keep things organized.

Tip: Use wiki-links to connect related notes. If your research report mentions concepts from other notes, link them with [[.

3

Create a Collection for the topic

Create a new Collection named after your research topic. Add the research report, relevant notes, and any URLs you want to reference later. This becomes your single source of truth for the topic.

Tip: Toggle context settings to control which items the AI references when you chat with the collection.

4

Upload supplementary documents

If you have PDFs, papers, or other documents related to your topic, upload them to the Documents section and add them to your collection. Chunk indexes them for AI search, so you can ask questions about your uploaded files alongside web research.

5

Chat with your collection for follow-ups

Open your collection and start a chat. The AI now has access to all your research — the report, your notes, uploaded documents, and web content. Ask follow-up questions, request summaries, or explore angles you haven't covered yet.

Tip: If you discover new subtopics, run another Research Report and add it to the same collection to deepen your knowledge base.
