What is Chunk and how do I use it?

Chunk is an AI-powered app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that helps you manage and reference your files and documents. Using the OpenAI GPT-4 API, Chunk allows you to add your documents to its knowledge base and then ask questions directly regarding the content of these documents for quick referencing, summarization, or explanation.

To use Chunk, simply upload your files to the app, add relevant tags to organize your content, and ask Chunk questions related to your stored information. Chunk will search your documents and provide precise snippets, summaries, or explanations based on its extensive understanding, powered by GPT-4-Turbo, and GPT-4 Vision APIs. Your data remains private as the app does not sell user data and only uses it to provide services offered within the app itself.

How does Chunk keep my data private and secure?

Chunk App is committed to protecting your privacy and securing your data through multiple layers of protection:

TLS Encryption: Chunk uses TLS (Transport Layer Security) for all communications between your device and our servers, ensuring that any data transmitted remains private and secure. Firewalls and Secure Infrastructure: The app is hosted on Google Cloud, a secure and scalable platform with a robust set of security features and firewalls.

We securely store API keys , which helps to manage sensitive information by keeping it encrypted at all times.

Authentication: Your documents are stored in Google Cloud, which requires authorization for access. Only users who are authenticated can reach their own documents, preventing unauthorized access.

To protect against abuse and ensure only our app can access your documents stored in Firebase, we use a system called App Check, providing an additional layer of security.

What type of documents can I add to Chunk's knowledge base?

Chunk currently supports PDF, RTF, Plaintext, Epub, docX, XML, and Markdown files

How do I search and reference documents in Chunk?

To search and reference documents in Chunk, simply start by uploading any files you want into Chunk’s knowledge base. Once your files are uploaded, you can begin referencing your documents in several ways:

Ask Chunk directly: If you're looking for something specific, phrase your query with as much precision as possible. For example, if you’re searching for a document with details about a project named 'Atlas', you could ask, “What is the status update on Project Atlas mentioned in the March reports?” Chunk uses your precise language and content from your documents to find the most relevant information.

Utilize tags: You can add tags to your documents for easier searching. Using tags acts like filters, which can help you include, exclude, or compare documents. For instance, if you have tags named 'Q1' and 'Financials', you could apply these to filter results to that specific intersection.

Access Documents: Here, you can manage your uploaded files, add tags, and CHUNK your documents to organize your content optimally, depending on the level of detail required.

Use the Related Documents sidebar: On the iPad and Mac versions of Chunk, the sidebar will show documents related to your current chat conversation or note, allowing you to quickly reference pertinent files.

Rely on smart tags: As you create and upload Notes, smart tags can be automatically generated based on the content, making it even easier to categorize and find related notes later.

Remember, the efficiency of your searches is significantly improved by properly tagging and detailing your notes and documents at the point of creation or afterward during editing.

How can I ensure accurate and precise AI responses with Chunk?

To ensure accurate and precise AI responses with Chunk, follow these tips:

- Be precise with your questions, matching the language of your documents when possible.

- Use tags to categorize and filter, aiding Chunk in narrowing down the search to relevant documents.

- Utilize Chunk’s CHUNKing feature to break down larger documents into manageable 'chunks' for more focused AI analysis. Use the default, Medium for most documents and notes is usually the best choice. However for larger files i.e. Books, code, or documents with multiple pages of information we suggest using large chunks.

- Regularly update and refine your tags to maintain an organized knowledge base.

- Leverage the power of Chunk’s Writing Assistant for grammar checks, summarization, tone adjustments, creative writing enhancements, and more—to polish and refine your input, resulting in improved AI understanding and responses.

By adhering to these practices, you'll enhance Chunk’s ability to provide on-target responses based on the content in your documents, leading to a more satisfactory and efficient use of Chunk.

What writing assistance does Chunk offer?

Chunk offers a comprehensive suite of writing assistance tools within its Notes feature. When you write or take notes, you can utilize Chunk’s advanced AI-powered options. Here’s what you can do:

Grammar Check: Improves your writing by checking for grammatical errors.

Tone: Adjusts the tone of your writing to be more persuasive, inspirational, culturally sensitive, sarcasm and irony aware, or to convey empathy and compassion. Alternatively, you can add an emotional tone such as excitement or calmness.

Creative Writing: Enhances your text by providing options such as 'Re-Write', which rephrases your original text; 'Keep Writing', which continues from where your text ends; and 'New Ideas/Topics', which suggests new concepts or themes to explore in your writing.

Translate Text: Offers the ability to translate your note into ten popular languages: English, Spanish, Chinese, French, German, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese, Hindi, and Arabic.

Context Integration: If you have related documents opened, Chunk will ask if you want to include them as context for more accurate assistance.

The generated responses appear in a floating text box UI, giving you the ability to seamlessly integrate the suggestions into your notes by adding the content, replacing it, or dismissing the feedback.

Does Chunk accept Images?


Chunk utilizes OpenAI’s GPT-4 Vision API in its Chat feature to enhance the user experience with advanced image analysis capabilities. When a user uploads an image via the Chat, the API processes the image by identifying and analyzing the contents, such as text, graphs, charts, and the overall context within the photo or image. The images uploaded in the Chat are only stored temporarily and are deleted once the Chat is reset. Storing images as documents or in notes in the vector database is currently not supported.

How does the Documents Tab work?

Upload compatible documents by pressing the + Button in the Documents tab. You’ll then be presented with the file you want to upload and the option to choose between ‘Small, Medium, or Large chunking of your document. The default setting Medium is best for most 1-3 pages documents. Press the (?) button for more details one when its best to use different chunking sizes. Then add a ‘Tag’ to your document so you can use it with the Filters in Chat for improved speed and accuracy.

How can I access and use tags in Chunk?

Accessing and using tags in Chunk is straightforward. Follow these steps to manage and utilize tags in your Chunk workflow:

1. Upload your documents into Chunk's knowledge base. Before the upload, you have the option to add tags to each document. If you forget or want to change the Tag of a document later you can Edit the document/note in the Document Tab and set a new Tag.

2. In Notes, Smart tags are automatically generated (on device) based on the content of your writing, making it easier to categorize and group related notes or documents. Also as you create tags, these existing tag will be available in the Note tab or when uploading new documents.

3. You can access your tagged documents quickly by enabling filters (Match, And, Or, Not) in the Chat tab before your search based on these tags.

4. If you need to reference an existing document, ask Chunk to provide the URL to the referenced document and use the URL provided to navigate directly to that document.

5. On devices like the iPad and Mac, use the related documents sidebar for quick access to files related to your current chat conversation.

What are the unique features of Chunk on iPhone, iPad, and Mac?

All of Chunks features are available in the Mac and iPad apps. The iPhone, due to size does not have access to the Related Content sidebar panel. Which also means in Notes, related documents can’t be used with Writing Assistant features.
